Hakuna Matata. 

If you are ever fortunate to make the trip to Tanzania and Zanzibar island, this is something you will hear a lot. Its literal translation is “No Worries” from the Swahili tongue. As a tourist, it is very easy to fall into the Hakuna Matata mindset and enjoy a week in a controlled paradise via safaris, snorkeling with dolphins, and just the sheer breathlessness you will be left with from the beautiful views. Unfortunately, the people of Tanzania do have a lot to worry about. The infrastructure for things we take for granted such as water and electricity are a day to day struggle for the majority of Tanzanians. It is a stretch to call many of the roads, roads at all as they have not been paved unless the path is to a resort area. With a quick look down, you will see the lack of shoes on children’s feet, while things like book bags and educational materials are simply out of reach. Through all of this, Hakuna Matata remains the over arching mindset of the people. I saw more smiles on a day to day basis in Tanzania than I had in my homeland the U.S.A. in years. I found a place where people genuinely believe that with a positive attitude they could weather any storm. The impressions Tanzania left on my soul will never fade. It was always my intention to leverage Pieces Like Me to change the world, now I have a clear initiative to make this a reality. Twenty percent of all the proceeds from our puzzle sales are directed to the creation of water wells throughout Tanzania. Today many Tanzanians don’t have access to clean water. Often times you will witness women and children carrying gallons of water via head and buckets to sustain their homes. These trips are often over a mile away. Something we can’t imagine in our lives. Furthermore, the youth are taught in the educational system to become farmers yet when they gain the knowledge, there is no water to farm the land. For just $6000 One well can provide potable water to a community of 1,000 ultimately changing their lives and the world forever.
